How many of you think India spends too much on Defence?.?

We spend around 22-23 billion USD on defence p.a . this is about 3% of our GDP . there are some people who argue we should spend less on defence by comparing with European countries , japan etc who spend around 1-2% of their GDP on defence. They forget that these countries rely mostly on the protective shield of the US . moreover even 1% of japan's GDP gives them a defence budget of 45 billion USD. We have the third largest military in terms of manpower but cannot afford to pay our soldiers well. Annually billions of dollars are missappropiated by politicians and middlemen , while soldiers suffer as there is delay in arms acquisition . We have to face the twin threats of Pakistan and China while Internal security is another matter .Most of our equipment is of 60's vintage, supplied by the soviets.Our troops are making the best possible use of these equipment but they will have to be inevitably replaced. i think the armed forces should be given a freer hand in buying their equipment.

I think we are spending too little on our defence! But more of the spending should go toward R&D not purchasing foreign made equipment. We should rely on indigenously developed equipment to be worth our salt in the international sphere! God bless the Indian soldier! Race over religion! It does not matter if you are an indian christian or an Indian muslim. Indian christians are treated badly in the west and Indian muslims are treated badly in the middle east!
We are a culturally similar people, let us not fight amongst each other for what happens to muslims in Iraq who don't give a shit about Indians Hindus or muslims. Indians should worry about Indians! How can an Indian muslim justify crying themselves hoarse over treatment of muslims in Iraq but remain silent on the deaths of Hindus they live with, share festivals, food and celebrations with, in India to terrorism! Fcuk everyone else let India be for Indians!
