Non Cga Question about my Oneill Checkmate Non CGA?
I just picked up a new Checkmate today, this will be my second non-cga vest. I previously had a Jet Pilot falcon, but when I had that death never crossed my mind.
I have been boarding for 12 years but it's not till recently that I have been hearing about all these drownings regarding comp vest.
I have a couple questions, will the Checkmate float me pretty well? It seems a little more bulky then my Falcon. Or when I exhale will I just sink like a rock?
The other question, if I do get knocked out and my board stays on I shouldn't sink right?
Normally the problem with using a non CGA vest is not that it won't keep you afloat. The human body itself has positive buoyancy. The reason that the vests are not CGA approved is usually because they won't automatically orient you to a heads up position when you're knocked unconscious and end up in the water. The best CGA approved vests have that big pillow behind your head and are bulky down the front. All that flotation wants to be on the surface of the water and therefore you end up hanging underneath it face up and out of the water. So to answer your question you shouldn't sink but you could still end up floating face down in your vest if you're knocked unconscious.
