Paddling Pfd Falling into a chest-deep river with a life jacket on?
I cannot swim, although as a kid I was able to paddle backwards with my feet with a PFD on. In the event of such a situation, what are the strokes I must use to either swim to shore, or stand upright? Keep in mind there is a moderate current.
I know very little about swimming, and my first instinct is usually to gasp and flail.
When I went river rafting, the guides told us to do this in the event we got thrown out of the raft: Lean back like you're sitting in a recliner. RELAX. Raise your feet up so your toes are near the surface. Keep your hands out to each side. If you are going through rapids, you can use your hands to steer around rocks. It might sound odd, but it works. Even the people in our group who were not comfortable in water got the hang of this right away.
I would think the same applies if you're in a river that is not moving as fast -- but just in slow motion. The main thing to remember is to relax -- the life jacket will do the work for you.

Harmony Kayak Looking for a spray skirt for my Old Town Otter Kayak?
I am looking for a spray skirt for my Old Town Otter Kayak, I have looked at many on eBay. But most just say S,M,L, or XL but don't say what the dimensions are.

You can also get a mini skirt for it. I have an older Perception recreation boat that I have a mini skirt for. It's great for keeping paddle drips out, but on a hot summer day, you still have plenty of air to keep you cool. This one should fit your Otter:

I have a 21 foot boat with a big 75hp outboard on the back and all the saftery equipment you can imagine costing £thousands and still have been caught out at sea! Let me tell you its the worst experience ever... 1 rouge wave would wipe/swamp a rib that size out in one fowl swoop. And the weather can change very very quickly at sea.
I once also had to tow a 10 foot rowing boat with a couple of lads on board who got into difficulty with strong currents, if i hadnt been there to throw a rope to them god only knows where they would be now. Its definately not worth it for a few fish!
Why dont you try fishing for mackerel of the shore?? They tend to stick quite close to the shore in their ever long search for small fish and sandeels. Ive had many a day where i can fill a bag of mackerel in a couple of hours just casting a trace of feathers in from the shore.
